The Wave Editorial: Give City Workers Their Jobs Back

This editorial must be heard by New York’s political machine because New York City needs its’ municipal workers put back into their jobs, same salary and all benefits as before they were wrongfully terminated or forced to resign.

Editorial: Give City Workers Their Jobs Back

September 27, 2024

Back in September of 2022, NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced New York City’s private businesses will no longer have to require their employees to have COVID-19 vaccines. Then, on  Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, Adams announced the draconian mandates for city workers were being lifted.

Yet, there are thousands of city workers, including police officers, firefighters, sanitation workers, and educators who have not gotten their jobs back.

To add to the outrage, says NYC Councilwoman Joann Ariola, were the revelations from Dr. Jay Varma, the former Senior Advisor for Public Health for New York City, that the mandates were indeed a choice rather than a necessity.

In a letter to Adams, Ariola wrote the following:

This week we learned that Dr. Jay Varma, the former Senior Advisor for Public Health for New York City, admitted to forcing an unnecessary COVID 19 vaccine mandate and shutdown on New York City. The mandate and shutdown that was imposed on city workers, school children, business owners and all our residents has caused irreparable damage to so many of those lives. Marriages have ended, families have been torn apart. We have city workers who have been forced to live in homeless shelters and who are waiting on food pantry lines all because of the irresponsible choices by Dr. Varma and the DeBlasio Administration.

Dr. Varma stated in one of the exposed videos that everyone was exposed to the virus and whether it was “breathed on you or you got it injected in you, it’s the same immune response.” This statement clearly validates what so many of our city workers felt when the mandate was being forced on them. They had all been exposed to the worst strain of the virus during the height of the pandemic. They had faced Covid-19 head on with little to no PPE, while everyone was sitting home watching the news for updates and watching Dr. Varma tell us lies.

You have the chance to correct the wrongs that have been inflicted on dedicated members of the New York City workforce. It is time to reinstate and compensate all the city workers who were forced to retire, resigned or [were] terminated because of the COVID 19 vaccination mandate. All the appeals that have been placed on judgements that city workers have already won need to be lifted and every single worker who has separated from a city job needs to be contacted to see if they want to return to work for New York City. All New York City workers need to receive every penny of back pay and time owed, with overtime, that is owed to them from the date they were separated from the city. This is the fair and just way to try to mend the wrongs that were inflicted by the previous administration.

This revelation is from the words the very architect of the COVID 19 vaccine mandate and shut down. All of this was unnecessary and a tragedy to those whose lives have been devastated by Dr. Varma’s actions during the DeBlasio Administration and his advice to you, Mr. Mayor. Now that these revelations have come to light, [it] is incumbent upon you to right this wrong.

The Wave couldn’t agree more.
